high tide harry’s

a local area crab shack just opened up the street from us.  The menu is chock full of local delicacies like gator tail and conch fritters, po-boys and crab legs.  We stopped in last night to check it out.  The dining room and oyster deck transport you to the beach with all kinds of painted fish and crab shack decor.  They serve 32 ounce fish bowls of mixed beach drinks and huge servings of seafood with the usual suspects of cole slaw, fries and garlic toast.  We will definitely be taking our out of town guests here!

roasted onion and gruyere panini

worked late tonight but still had time to talk to a friend while I made the roasted onions which are really carmelized onions wilted in olive oil with oregano. Really incredible Tom Collichio ‘Wichcraft panini for dinner. Basically a sandwich version of french onion soup.

interns – part two

a month or two ago I signed up to host a handful of interns for supper.  Who knew the schedule this week would be unforgiving.   We couldn’t let them down though and served up sweet raspberry limeade, lemony wedge salads, mushroom cheddar burgers and cheese fries with a side of conversation.  I am particularly pleased with our presentation – baskets and stripy liners.

Cheese Sauce

1/4 cup butter
1/4 cup flour
2 cups milk
1 1/2 teaspoons cayenne pepper
1 1/2 cups sharp cheddar cheese

melt the butter in a saucepan over medium heat.  Whisk in flour and cook for several minutes to get rid of the floury taste.  Whisk in milk, a half cup at a time.  Whisk in cayenne.  Whisk in sharp cheddar and serve over oven baked fries.

rainbow

been spending a lot of hours at work lately with evening and weekend college groups visiting, a ladies lunch and some mia staff due to illness.  The other night I was there until about 7 welcoming 180 college students from Indiana for the evening.  They arrived with an unleashing of water from the heavens.  This was the scene as I walked out the door for home.

columbia restaurant

long story short.  My parents are predictably unpredictable.  They showed up in Sarasota over the 4th of July weekend for a weeks stay.  We went to Columbia‘s for a belated birthday dinner.  Spanish-Cuban.  I love it.   They have already headed back to Colorado.
