the fleet is in

we walked around historic Charleston downtown this late afternoon.  We stopped at the Moon Pie General Store (free samples!) and bought a bottle of water and asked the guy behind the counter for a good recommendation for dinner.  He suggested Fleet Landing which is housed in the old US Navy building.  He also suggested shrimp & grits.  We made our way over and waited for a seat on the deck.  We watched sailboats and shrimp boats come in and a huge container ship leave port.  The sun began to set while we ate and scores of dragonflies flittered and played over the marsh grass off the deck.  Dolphins played and swam in the water too.  It was kind of magical.  And, I actually ordered the shrimp & grits.  Kind of a revelation.  They were like the best mashed potatoes you ever had but different.  Creamy & textured and lovely.

muscadine grapevines @ firefly distillery

fall harvest is about to be underway any day now.  I did a morning (oops) tasting of six vodka’s made right here in the Charleston area at Firefly.  Notably lemonade (my favorite of the tasting-fresh made daily) and sweet tea.  Strangely I kept thinking of Snapple but it wasn’t really like that.  It is out of town about a half hour passing tiny little roads named after their plantation and tiny little churches on roads that sweep under trees that drip with spanish moss and cover the sky.

run for the border

and not taco bell, either.  Made it to Charleston via some one lane backroads through marshes, over rivers and flying over bridges.  We find that Z hates tall bridges so I get to drive.  We had kind of a huge lunch at Uncle Bubba’s and opted for On The Border for supper.  Not very Charlestonian but close by and we were tired.  It is kind of like the Red Robin of Tex-Mex, which we miss in Orlando- solid.

going north to the south

we’re on a short holiday from work. I have been begging for a bit of a road trip for a couple of months now and we headed out this morning for Charleston, South Carolina. It’s about a seven hour drive from Orlando proper. We made a brief stop about five hours into our journey for lunch in Savannah, GA at Uncle Bubba’s Oyster House. Bubba is the brother of Paula Deen, the butter and bacon -toot, toot! queen herself. We chose his menu over hers and we weren’t disappointed at all. Z had hand battered chicken fingers and I had a crab cake po’ bubba with sweet tea. Sweetest tea ever! I drove a bit after lunch and over this crazy tall bridge that took us right over the swamp into the lowcountry.
